Michael G. Burton

Armagh Planetarium and Observatory

(In office 2016– present)

Educated at Universities of Cambridge and Edinburgh, Prof. Michael Burton is an Australian astronomer who has worked in Hawaii, Australia, Chile, and even Antarctica as well as Ireland. His primary research focuses on the formation of stars within the molecular clouds of our Galaxy.

While it was Dr Lindsay, the 7th Director of the Observatory, who built the Armagh Planetarium, the two institutions have been operating mostly separately in the intervening decades. Prof. Burton was appointed the first Director of the joint institution: Armagh Observatory and Planetarium. This has brought the research and education of astronomy closer together.
