Theresa Hardcastle

Armagh Planetarium and Observatory

The youngest daughter of Anglo-Indian civil servant, statesman and archaeologist Sir Edward Clive Bayley KCSI CIE and his wife Emily Metcalfe, author, Theresa Selina Clive married Joseph Hardcastle in 1899. Joseph was to take up his post as the fifth Director of the Armagh Observatory in 1917, but fell ill en-route to Armagh. Theresa carried on with their son and daughter to set up the household, fully expecting Joseph to join her upon recovery. Tragically, he never did; he died less than 3 weeks later. Theresa lived in the Observatory for a year and restored it to a liveable state, fit for the next Director to live in, and ensured that daily Observatory activities continued – including the nowadays highly important meteorological readings.
